The main thing that a parent can do to boost a child's comprehension and fluency is read with them every day.

April is National Poetry Month
Celebrate National Poetry Month by reading poetry with your children. Pick up a couple of children's poetry books and have your child find a favorite one. Read it several times. Write it in a journal. Carry a copy in your pocket. Memorize it. Record it on your cell phone. Video tape your child reciting the poem. This repetition helps children read with expression, develop fluency, and want to read more poems. Everyone loves to be able to recite a poem on demand and all children love seeing or hearing themselves perform.
