Even Movies Can Help Kids Learn to Read

I got this post directly from the PBS Kids Summer Reading Challenge.  Not only does it give you an opportunity to read with your child, it helps them feel involved in the family decision making process. Click on the link below to get other great assignments from this website.

Day 16 Assignment: Mini-Movie Critics in the Making: Read and Write Movie Reviews

Ready to check out this summer’s new blockbusters? Read the movie reviews together and have your kids weigh in on the decision!

Check out newspapers or online movie reviews with your kids, and ask what films they’re interested in (remember, you have veto power). And don’t just take a simple, two-word answer. Ask them to explain which reviews were appealing and why. Then decide what to see as a family based on what you learned from the reviews.
After seeing the film, write a review of it as a family. Ask your kids what they liked about the movie and incorporate everyone’s ideas into the review.
